Searchline Excel, Excel Plus and Excel Edge

Open path detectors monitor a line rather than a point. Instead of waiting for gas to reach a sensor, an infrared beam is projected across the area and any gas cloud crossing that beam is detected — which is the right principle for perimeters, pipe racks and loading areas.

What it is

Purpose and use

Honeywell states a dynamic monitoring range of 200 m for the established Searchline Excel. The next generation covers two ranges: Excel Plus from 2 to 120 m for medium distances, and Excel Edge from 60 to 330 m for long distances. Both come as standard with HART® over the 4-20 mA analogue output, Modbus and Bluetooth®.

The practical value of an open path installation is coverage per device. A single beam across a loading rack replaces a row of point detectors and still catches a cloud that drifts between them. The practical risk is alignment: a beam that is knocked out of adjustment stops protecting, which is why commissioning, mechanical stability of the mounting and a maintenance routine matter more here than with a point detector.

Application

Where it is used

  • Perimeter monitoring of process units and tank farms
  • Pipe racks and pipe bridges
  • Loading and unloading areas for road and rail tankers
  • Open plant areas where a point detector would be bypassed by a drifting cloud

Accessories and spare parts

  • Mounting frames and alignment accessories
  • Weather protection for the transmitter and receiver
  • Commissioning and alignment service

Service by VERTEX GmbH

What we deliver around this product

We design the beam paths, verify that the mounting structures are mechanically stable enough to hold alignment, install and align the units, test the alarm chain, and include the alignment check in the scheduled maintenance so that a misaligned beam does not become an unnoticed gap in the coverage.

FAQ

Questions about Searchline Excel, Excel Plus and Excel Edge

Open path or point detection?

Point detection where the release point is known and the gas will accumulate — a pump seal, a compressor, a sump. Open path where the release could be anywhere along a line and the atmosphere is open enough for a cloud to drift past a point detector. Large installations normally use both.

Which Searchline Excel version for which distance?

Excel Plus covers 2 to 120 m, Excel Edge covers 60 to 330 m, and the established Searchline Excel has a 200 m dynamic range. The path length is only part of the decision — the mounting structure, the expected obstruction of the beam and the ambient conditions decide the rest.
