Processes

What happens in this sector

Depots and maintenance workshops

Inspection pits, lifting jacks, diesel vehicles moving under their own power inside the building, battery charging for shunting and work vehicles, paint and coating work.

Vehicle overhaul

Component refurbishment, hydraulic and pneumatic assemblies, electrical and control system replacement, labelling and re-assembly.

Transfer and loading facilities

Transhipment between rail and road, fuelling points, and the parts of the site where a gas hazard is imported rather than generated.

Hazards

Which gases, and where they occur

Carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxideDiesel exhaust inside workshop buildings and above inspection pits, where heavier-than-air components collect.
HydrogenBattery charging areas for shunting and work vehicles.
Volatile organic compoundsPaint shops, cleaning and degreasing, adhesive application.
Oxygen deficiencyInspection pits and tanks during cleaning and inerting.

FAQ

Questions about Railway operations

Where do gas detectors belong in a depot with inspection pits?

Both above and below. Carbon monoxide distributes roughly with the air, nitrogen dioxide from diesel exhaust is heavier and collects in the pit, and hydrogen from charging rises to the roof. A single detection height answers one of those three questions. The measuring point concept follows the building, the ventilation and the vehicle movements.

Can you supply components that meet rail requirements?

That is the core of our railway business: electrical and control components, rail-grade hydraulics and pneumatics, safety and fire protection products and labelling material. Which approvals and standards apply to a specific part is confirmed with the quotation, in writing.
