Portable and wireless

Honeywell BW™ RigRat

The BW™ RigRat is a transportable multi-gas area monitor for extreme industrial environments — the instrument that watches the work site rather than the individual, during a shutdown, a hot work permit or an incident.

What it is

Purpose and use

Honeywell specifies an operating range of -40 °C to +60 °C and up to eight weeks of continuous operation on a single charge, which is what makes unattended deployment realistic. Up to six interchangeable sensor types can be fitted, including electrochemical, photoionisation, infrared and catalytic bead — so one device can cover a toxic gas, a combustible gas and a volatile organic compound at the same measuring point.

The instrument is certified for use in explosive atmospheres to ATEX/IECEx Zone 0 and CSA C1D1. It is controlled from a smartphone using Honeywell's Device Configurator app at a distance of up to five metres, and works with Honeywell Safety Suite for remote monitoring. Noise and meteorological sensors can be integrated, and several units can be positioned to form a wireless safety perimeter.

FAQ

Questions about Honeywell BW™ RigRat

How many area monitors do we need for a work site?

It depends on the release scenario, the prevailing wind and the geometry, not on the size of the site in square metres. Several units positioned around the work form a wireless safety perimeter; we work the positions out from where a release would come from and where it would travel.

Can the RigRat be left unattended over a weekend?

Honeywell states up to eight weeks of continuous operation on a single charge and certification for ATEX/IECEx Zone 0, so unattended deployment is the intended use. With Safety Suite the readings and alarms are visible remotely rather than only at the device.
